EMPTY BEACH WITH SALTIRE AND PURIST SYMBOLS 1991 - 1996 |
Next Painting This large work was shown in 1991 and completely reworked with the addition of the saltire for the solo exhibition In the Minds Eye. "The calmness of the 'diagrammatic model' landscape is balanced in the composition by a raft or platform on which the purist symbols are almost overwhelmed by the chaotic forms which dance around the saltire. It is like an archaeology of the painters imagination resolving itself into ever more direct and simple forms." Euan McArthur, In the Minds Eye. The saltire is reduced in both tone and colour and humorously represents the artists 'grey nationalism'. |
