A previous still life combined the plaster fragment of an antique cast with Auchmithie stones. The first painting exercise I did at art school was a series of tonal studies of the features of Michael Angelo’s David, the eye, nose, ear and mouth (referred to by the students as “ear nose and throat”). We were encouraged to introduce a little raw umber with ivory black and titanium white.
